Day Master Calculator

Your Day Master is the heavenly stem of your day pillar — the element at the center of your BaZi chart, and the one that represents you. There are ten: five elements, each in a yang and a yin form. This calculator finds yours from your birth date, corrected to true solar time.

The ten archetypes

The ten Day Masters

A Day Master is not a “sign” — it is a structural type. A towering tree and a climbing vine are both Wood, and nothing alike:

  • Yang WoodThe Oak
  • Yin WoodThe Vine
  • Yang FireThe Sun
  • Yin FireThe Lantern
  • Yang EarthThe Mountain
  • Yin EarthThe Garden
  • Yang MetalThe Blade
  • Yin MetalThe Jewel

Yang forms tend to act on the world directly; yin forms tend to work through relationship, timing, and adaptation. Neither is stronger — the chart around them decides how much support each one gets, which is what a full BaZi analysis reads.

Why calculators disagree

The midnight problem (and why we compute in true solar time)

The day pillar flips at midnight — but midnight where? Clock time is a political convention; the classical system runs on the sun. If you were born late at night, a calculator that ignores your longitude can assign you the wrong day pillar entirely — the wrong you. We convert your clock time to true solar time from your birthplace before computing anything. The full pipeline is documented on our methodology page.

Questions

FAQ

What is a Day Master in BaZi?

Your Day Master is the heavenly stem of your day pillar — one of ten yin/yang elemental types (like Yang Wood or Yin Fire) that sits at the center of your BaZi chart. Every other part of the chart is read in relation to it: it is the "you" the rest of the chart acts on.

Is my Day Master the same as my Chinese zodiac animal?

No. Your zodiac animal is the earthly branch of your YEAR pillar — one character out of eight, shared with everyone born that year. Your Day Master comes from your DAY pillar, which cycles every 60 days, and is far more specific to you.

Do I need my exact birth time to find my Day Master?

Usually no. The Day Master is set by your birth DATE, so most people get the correct result from date alone. The exception is a birth close to midnight in true solar time, where the day pillar can shift — if you know your time and city, enter them and we correct for it.

How is this calculator different from other BaZi calculators?

It corrects your clock time to true solar time using your birthplace (most free calculators skip this), it is tuned against classical references, and it explains the result in plain English instead of handing you an unexplained grid of characters.
